Gov. Cooper Proclaims April as North Carolina Safe Digging Month

NC811 reminds local residents to call 811 before all digging projects

GREENSBORO, NC (April 1, 2024) — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper issued a proclamation announcing April as NC Safe Digging Month at the Capital Building in Raleigh. These proclamations have been requested and obtained annually since 1988, a full 12 years before the formation of the Common Ground Alliance. The proclamation reminds NC homeowners to call 811 before starting any outdoor digging project.

The Underground Damage Prevention Review Board was created in 2014 for the purpose of:

  1. Reviewing all reports of alleged violations of Article 8A - Underground Utility Safety and Damage Prevention Act and accompanying information
  2. Acting as an arbitrator between parties to the report
  3. Determining the appropriate action or penalty to impose for each violation
  4. Notifying the North Carolina Utilities Commission of the recommended penalty
